American College of Radiology and the National Electrical Manufacturers Association. 1982 bildeten das ACR und NEMA eine Vereinigung zur Entwicklung eines generischen Kommunikationsstandards zur Übertragung von digitalen Bildern (DICOM: Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine). Der aktuelle Standard (Version 3.0) definiert nicht nur die Bilddaten, sondern auch die Übertragung von Patienten-, Besuchs-, Auftrags-/Untersuchungsdaten im Kontext der Bilder.
